While I say there are no rules in Sashiko, some try to enforce the “Right and Wrong” in Sashiko. Don’t get me wrong. I do have rules in Sashiko to make it better, but I do not force it. I just share it as one “Right (and Wrong)”. The essence of “Rules” isn’t the exclusion, or worse – domination, I hope. People made “rules” so that someone following with respect can repeat “it” with less difficulties. I believe, I would like to believe, there is “pray” underneath the “rules”, and therefore I do not say there are no rules to enforce (control) in Sashiko.

It is similar to law. We get greatly benefited by a law‐abiding society. Without law, we wouldn’t sustain our ordinary. However, I do not believe that law exists (primarily) for punishment. People wished to live in peace, and therefore, they put their hope into the Law. Law and Rules are important, and it is often easy to follow rather than think about. However (therefore), I want you to be mindful of what you are doing when you “tell others” the rules of your foreign culture. There are Japanese people who wish for better days, behind the word Sashiko. Do you feel them behind the rules? Whose rules are you following?

I really love what you have written here. Other words I think of are boundaries and instructions. We imagine boundaries and we know that if we cross them we come to a different place on the other side which is not this place. Not right or wrong but a different place from here with different outcomes and consequences.
