I will be flying to Phoenix, AZ soon for It is a trip from 12°F to 80°F, but I am so excited that I almost forgot to pack a winter Jacket to drive to the airport (90 mile… to the nearest airport. I live out of nowhere). I will be teaching a full-day workshop for 3 days. I probably won’t have time to enjoy the beautiful Quilt Show until Sunday, but I may be walking around after workshops. I will soak myself into the Show on Sunday morning for sure.
☆
I may look kind of “angry” in the first 3 days of Quiltcon, with a serious face & scary look in my eyes. It isn’t that I am in a bad mood. I am just extremely nervous about the workshop. No matter how many times I offer the workshop, every time I feel pressured. It is good. I will stop teaching when I don’t feel nervous before the workshop. Teaching “Cultural Practice” should be like this. I represent many Japanese Sashiko artisans who raised me. I would like to be respectful to both those who wish to take my workshop & those who made me teach Sashiko. I won’t ever take it “easy”.
☆
So, if you are going to be there & find me after 4:30 pm (after workshop), say “Hi” to me . I am a very amature in (Modern) Quilting, and I am so excited to learn the application of the Well-Appreciated tradition of Quilting to Today. I teach Sashiko, and many people I see in QuiltCon are (quilting/textile) teachers to me.

I believe Sashiko has several similarities to Zen philosophy. One of them is Zen’s core principal – 不立文字 (Furyumonji) – the philosophy of “the essence cannot be experienced with words and letters”. In order to understand Sashiko, words are not enough. One needs to stitch – hopefully in the same…

Same pattern, Different Size. Same Sashiko stitching, Different outcome. Same day today, but each day is special. After all, Mindfulness is not a technique (in my opinion). It is about caring and appreciating what we have and who we are. – (There are techniques to learn how to be mindful,…

We rarely make a Tapestry, or an item to be just “displayed”. It is because of our belief (value) for the Japanese Folk-Art Movement in the early 20th century. When we make one, we usually have a very specific theme – in this project, we wanted to visualize Atsushi’s statement:…

You were a wonderful instructor to me at the Seaport in New York nearly six years ago. How fortunate I was to sit beside you and stitch
