Sorry for silence for several days (I kind of mentioned I would post everyday).

In 2017, I offered the first “Core & Essence” Sashiko Workshop. It was named “Core & Basic” back then, and the length was 3 hours. Ever since, I have been studying what is the best way to teach the Sashiko we practice. Many graduates who enjoy the “Core & Essence” of Sashiko today encourage me that I am doing a good job in teaching, not only sharing.
☆
I occasionally receive a comment saying that the fee for the Sashiko class/workshop is too expensive (to take). Yes, it isn’t “cheap”. I understand that not everyone can afford it. However, saying “a parting shot” to me for not taking the class is pretty disrespectful. I believe the class (both In-Person and Online) is worth every penny because it teaches life-time skill & knowledge on Sashiko – more importantly, it teaches the first-step to learn the whole picture of Sashiko. It isn’t like, “Let’s enjoy Sashiko together” type workshop. It is their learning experience. (This is pretty much only one workshop I ask to take to learn what Sashiko is: every other workshop I offer is more like “Let’s Enjoy Sashiko Together” based on the skill I share in the “Core & Essence”).

Again, I know, not everyone can afford it. It is not my intention to filter learners based on what they have & don’t have. Therefore, I share tons of Live Streaming on Youtube for free. If one is very serious in learning, they may be able to reach the same place: I just cannot promise it via Youtube, or it may take years. For the paid Class, I will make sure that you will get what you need to start seeing the whole picture. When one claims that she/he is serious in learning their foreign culture, Is it too much to ask to pay some fee to learn more? (The Online Class for Dec. has a bit of opening left. There may be a spot for 3-days Sashiko Workshop in FL in Jan, as well. Please check the profile for the links).

😌
When travel is safer I plan to save up and come to one of your workshops. It isn’t cheap, but your experience and time have a great deal of value. It’s a privilege to have a teacher like you here in the states. Thank you.
Your workshop at the Center for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh was one of the highlights of my 2021, and I continue to enjoy sashiko (by myself haha) now. Thank you!
🙏🏼
I totally can understand both sides. I think most of the time the ‘to expensive’ isn’t meant to say you should charge less or your cladses/teaching isn’t worth the money but only to express that it’s not in their budget. I would love to take many many classes in different skills (block printing, drawing, sewing, etc.) but right now I’m not able to. I don’t even know how to pay for small Christmas presents right now… so I totaly can understand people who say they can’t afford it. But that’s fine. Like you said, you offer many informations for free so I can stick to that (for now) and I’m really grateful that you share those things because you have to pay your bills too!
I remember what you’ve said in the past about the Japanese way of students “stealing” their knowledge by watching the teacher carefully while they work. You’ve expressly encouraged anyone to do that – watch your YouTube channel or live streams and learn in the Japanese way – and I thank you for it.
Sorry, I don’t understand which one is the link for seeing where and when the January class in Florida will be. I am in Florida for some of the month so I would love to see where and when, and how much. Link for that is which one?
Sadly, a lot of societies are moving toward an attitude of buying things very cheaply & the respect for, & valuing of, craftsmanship is being lost. 😢
