In a conversation with my students who recently took my workshop, I found her pure reaction interesting. She said: “Oh, You aren’t ‘Sashiko Police’ then”. I am NOT… hahaha. I really hope that you understand that I am not. I never patrol on SNS to crack down on someone specific “appropriating” the culture. I am just sharing the stories so that “we” can be the majority to respect the culture instead of those who “cherry-pick” the culture. When one attacks me directly, then I will reply with a strict (but reasonable) request to be on the same page. How can I discuss Sashiko with those who mainly care about how to get attention with the word Sashiko?

I ask them to learn “more”. Take as many Sashiko workshops as they want. I never say to my students that my Sashiko Class is the answer, or the whole package. I always tell them that it is just the start of their whole bigger Sashiko. My Sashiko Class is just another “equipment” to enrich their journey. I am just asking to avoid discussing the “Whole picture” of Sashiko while ignoring the voice from the actual Japanese Sashiko artisans – unfortunately, which happens a lot. Some Japanese say there are no rules in Sashiko. Some Non-Japanese say there are rules. I say I cannot define (the whole picture of) Sashiko. Some who do not understand the Japanese easily define what Sashiko is… that’s how the frustration occurs. What I have been learning in 38 years is not the same as someone’s 38 hours of “trying”.

I am not a police to rule the community. I am just trying to protect a home where anyone can come back to recharge.
