The Sashiko Face Mask we made in 2020, which I introduced on this account from scratch, is now being exhibited in ROM as a part of “Unmasking the Pandemic” Exhibition. It is a great honor to be part of this. Since it is difficult for me to travel to ROM now, they kindly send me photos. I also contributed some videos of my stitching to introduce what Sashiko is for the visitors. I made a video introducing this exhibition on Youtube. Please watch it!! (https://youtu.be/lJ93jtSMOS4). And if you can make a visit to ROM, please let me know what it looks like!
☆
I know. It is strange. If you follow me here for a while, you know that I do not consider Sashiko as Art (yet). At the same time, I do humbly accept the admiration for Sashiko as Art. Since ROM explained the concept of this exhibition, I was happy to contribute without feeling uncomfortable, just a bit strange to see Sashiko in the case. There are many reasons why I do not consider Sashiko as Art. Some are available on SNS, Youtube and Patreon. It is, also, my time to learn more about the “Art”. I have so many “memories (PTSD)” from my childhood to say out loud that what I do is ART.

I sometimes use the words “privilege” and “power”, which may be uncomfortable for you to read. They are new words to me. To be honest,I have never thought of “privilege” until I moved to the US (which clarifies that I was privileged in Japan). Understanding this “privilege” is important to…

The photo shown on the advertisement (on this post) is the “backside” of the “Boro-to-be” Sashiko Jacket. The Selvedge Magazine team picked it, and I am happy to share this beautiful photo. However, I want you to know that it is the “backside” of the Jacket, and it is supposed…

☆ I welcome and enjoy a variety of interpretations of Sashiko. In addition to that, let me rephrase this: the technique makes a big difference. Speed isn’t the priority, but we wouldn’t be proud of the slowness in stitching. Hand-stitching is slow (in comparison to machine), yet we…

My great grandmother used to embroider each little dish towel she got with a day of the week so she could remember to change them out daily. It was beautiful work, but I think you’d have a hard time convincing her it was art, too. It was just something she did for utility. It was functional. To her it wasn’t art, beautiful as it may have been.
