When I talk about “Sustainability (& our thread)”, there is a disagreement saying “It is about you. I do not have to spend any dime by using the thread I purchased a long time ago”. Yes, this statement is true. If one has a pile of thread, I wouldn’t want them to throw threads away. I want them to use it for other purposes like mending. If they decide to use it for Sashiko, then I want them to understand the difference in threads, and explain it when they call it Sashiko. If they insist on using the word Sashiko shouting the importance of sustainability, then I want them to think about Cultural Sustainability as well. Is it too much to ask?

Every time I read one of your posts, something new falls into place. Another small piece of understanding fits. Today it was the difference in threads. I will use my stash of thread to practise Sashiko style, and be inspired by, but it will not be Sashiko.

So how do we quantify/qualify the aspect of Sashiko that *is* about sustainability and using what is readily available vs. I guess “Buying in” to the purchase of Sashiko thread ? Of course I understand purchasing thread from a guy who is transliterating the culture of Sashiko works on one level. The culture is explained and bolstered and therefore valued if the person doing the explaining is financially supported. However the very act of absorbing what is transliterated ensures my awareness that if I were to practice Sashiko techniques as a non-Japanese my efforts are inauthentic by default. At best inspired imitation. I cannot therefore “seek authenticity” in my own work, and certainly not with importation of materials.
