“Sashiko is a good meditation. It calms me down and helps me to get out of the panic.” I often see this type of description about Sashiko online. For me, as one Sashiko practitioner who once considered Sashiko as “Curse” and cause of all my suffering, this on-going image of Sashiko is strange, and interesting. I am NOT dismissing the perspective of Sashiko as meditation. Sashiko is, indeed, helpful in balancing our mental condition. If you find Sashiko as calming & meditative practice, I am happy that Sashiko can be part of your life.

I just want you to keep learning, though, since Sachiko’s core is deeply related to Japanese culture. Have you ever thought “Why” Sashiko is effective as “meditation” or “remedy for anxiety”? Please do not “equalize” it to “Zen”. It is NOT wrong to say Sashiko is Zen-Stitching, but it isn’t describing enough, as I have been sharing the core principle of Zen here.
☆
There is no wonder why Sashiko is an effective remedy for you, mainly for those with Western Mindset. I have shared some stories on Patreon, so if you want to read my insight as a package, please check our Patreon page (Article about Meditation, Mindfulness, and Zen). In Short, we need to be mindful in “Purpose”. What is your purpose of the purpose? In our practice, “cause” and “outcome(effect)” play an important role. Often (not always), the “purpose” connects cause and outcome. What is your “cause”, “purpose” and “outcome”? Once you see these one by one, you will enjoy “it” more.

It is almost impossible to offer the “summarized answer (definition)” for this. It is an on-going study of my 35 years. Therefore, I share stories here and talk on Youtube. It would be great if you could enjoy my Live Streaming as you stitch. One day, I am sure you will find “it”. If you find it, then my goal of passing down Sashiko is achieved.

I’m very new to sashiko and for me it is a way of showing appreciation to what we own and the acceptance of imperfections or maybe a better way to focus on the possibilities instead of limitations. I wish I had heard about sashiko when I was much younger to imply this point of view earlier and give this to my family too. I also understand it as a way of art but an art that is self serving to our needs. I’m eager to learn more and as an European I’m probably will never do it right but I’m keeping the good and enjoy the process of learning and applying it to my own possibilities.
