The monetary System (Coins and Bills) visualized the measure of wealth. Liberali

atsushijp, 2021年7月17日

The monetary System (Coins and Bills) visualized the measure of wealth. Liberalization (freedom society) pursues individualism and responsibility that one has to carry (to be wealthy). Capitalism rushes us to complete each other to be “free” and “wealthy”. Once we drop out from the “system”, then it is extremely challenging to get back on the track. Well, we may call them being eliminated by natural selection. Well… at least, I used to think that “they didn’t do what they had to do – therefore, they are out of the competition” until I started re-learning what Sashiko is.

☆

Some cultures exist(ed) outside of this running wheel. If I were to verbalize (extremely roughly) the fear, it is us (Sashiko) being forced to be running in the wheel. Don’t get me wrong. We have been running on the wheel as well. However, it was a wheel made by Japanese.

☆

Sashiko is merely a form of hand-stitching. Anyone can do that with anything they have. However, the culture of Sashiko exists today on the sweat & hard work by many Japanese who have spent their lives trying to make this culture better (and more accessible). It is so ironic that we may lose some of them because it became a “trend” – in which I thought it would save them instead of pushing them out. Well. I have to admit. I was too late. However, it doesn’t mean there is nothing I can/should do.

Many ask me, “How can you make stitches so even?”. My answer is, “because I am not trying to”. There are many reasons for me sharing the Sashiko. I introduced 4 main reasons why it is important to learn posture instead of just “technique”. One of the Sashiko Cores is…

Sashiko isn’t only about (visible) mending. Sashiko isn’t only about stitching beautiful patterns. It is how the ordinary Japanese layered their ordinary days. I come across many interpretations of Sashiko. The culture should alter its form over time. I get that. But, someone needs to shout out, “This is the…

I believe one core essence of Sashiko is “Communication via needle & thread to myself” – and “Dialogue via fabric to memories (others)”. Even stitches and beautiful patterns are important, but secondary. I am stitching 100 meters of Asano-ha patterns to introduce this priority. I say out loud as if…

I believe we true humans are already moving away from the hamster wheel (running wheel) back towards simplicity, when the attitude and practice of sashiko will be essential.

Capitalism is a modern idea, and cultures from countries like Japan (basically most cultures) were created without Capitalism in mind. Cultural Commodification is the rebranding of heritage like Sashiko for it to survive in Capitalism (sometimes by people outside the heritage, aka C.Appropriation), which makes it unlike its original & traditional form. To be truly free and to honor those traditions, we can return to that state before Capitalism! Back to time where economies were based on the needs of the civilians instead of the wants of the gluttonous few. 🙌💪

Perhaps also going back to silence for some hours a day and put out all the media( keeping only the telephone in another piece of the house) . I think our concentration is more fully in silence without being interrupted too often. That is my experience.

I love your words. Everything is worthwhile in some way or another but I can’t agree with you more. Once you drop out it is incredibly difficult to drop back in the system.

So beautiful. And so many stitches. Awe inspiring. There is a distinct difference in my view between the Japanese Sashiko and the trendy Sashiko. It is good for the ones learning Sashiko to know the history and to realize that their (my) trend-born coasters and pillows came from an authentic history, a need. But the pieces I create will never have the gravitas and beauty and spirit that a Japanese piece (like yours) does. It cannot. It is not my history.
