Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

This is my 5th year of teaching Sashiko. Life is interesting. I am realizing what I had considered as “Mediocre (in today’s society)” is actually what the others are interested in learning.

☆

I have not met anyone who teaches Sashiko in the same way as I stitch/teach in me memory. After many years, I have reached this style where “everyone” can stitch as we do. In 2016, with determination, I made the first Youtube Video to share what Sashiko is. Today, interestingly, I came across some teachers who “sell” the package of Sashiko stitching that looks similar to the way I stitch.

☆

I am NOT claiming the way I stitch is only “mine”. There are(were) numbers of Sashiko artisans/stitchers in Japan, and it is natural to imagine that others may have reached the same place as I am today. I just want to meet the Japanese Sashiko stitcher who teach how to stitch Sashiko like I do. Then, I can finally have “a fellow” in Sashiko. It is unfortunate that I couldn’t get the name when I had asked them who they had learned from. Well, if they have “copied” what I do and made it as a product, then it is a different story.

☆

I am NOT saying they shouldn’t copy and teach. If they copy what I do, I want them to copy it accurately, and teach with being extra careful in filtering the culture. We live in a “free” society. Many had warned me I shouldn’t make the video. However, I mindfully decided to “share (for free)” because passing down (our) Sashiko “as is” is more important for me. I encourage you to copy the way I stitch. I share an unedited version of stitching in Live Streaming. “Observing” is a good way to learn. When you happen to have surplus in your budget, please consider taking my class. It will/may then offer you more than “copying”. I do my best in teaching.

☆

Teaching culture (for money) comes with big responsibility. And, it is you and me who choose whom we learn from.

Society asks you to be someone special. They say, “Find true-self within you”, and encourage you to be the “Only One” by doing something. They teach you how to be creative as if creativity clears your suffering. If “creativity is the greatest rebellion in existence (Quote from Osho)”, what they…

I am on a journey of learning more about Sashiko/Boro, like you are. However, there are 2 statements I can make. 1. Sashiko is NOT the word for Pattern/Design. 2. Boro is NOT the word for specific stitching Technique. When one has a “western” mindset, they may feel, “Atsushi, instead…

I see some sayings like “A thimble is not necessary in Sashiko”. It is interesting to me because I cannot do any Sashiko without the thimble. Please do not misread this. I am NOT saying “Sashiko without thimble is wrong.” Again, there is no Right or Wrong in Sashiko. However,…

Great though and advices. I share the same feelings about the teaching industry and been philosophical distancing. For me sharing knowledge is more important than to bee someone who just makes, is much like a spiritual practice to give not expecting something back.

I’m sorry if you have answered this question many times already, I’m just curious, in Japanese culture do both men and women do Sashiko stitching? It seems like in Western culture this kind of work would be considered “women’s work” – it’s interesting to me to see how different cultures view work in gendered ways.
