Last weekend, I had the great fortune to greet a “ Living Legend” in a Japanese Textile industry. She is a pioneer in introducing the Japanese textile (especially Shibori) to outside of Japan. This March, I will have a great honor to be in the same talk-event at (@selvedgemagazine). As a Japanese, it is the most important thing to greet appropriately before anything. I end up speaking so loudly on this account in English because of the trend of twisted Sashiko & Boro, but in reality, I am still a scholar. I didn’t speak up for a long time because I knew I would be overwhelmed.
☆
She gave me this phrase several times. “頑張って” to support (cheer) what I do. “頑張って” is one of the difficult Japanese phrase to translate, but I understood as “Keep it up”. It was such a great relief to have a mutual understanding with someone like her. “It isn’t wrong, but (we feel) something is missing”. The culture is supposed to change over time, However, there are some essences we shouldn’t ignore. “Respect” will not be validated by words, only action (of using the words) can express the respect.
☆
I am quite nervous… but it is a privilege to talk & share in such a great magazine platform with respectful people. (Please find the details for this event from the Selvedge Magazine Account).

So wonderful that you received encouraging words from a person whom you respect!
I’m sure you’ll be great. I love your work & appreciate your comments!
Atsushi 🙏 congratulations for the talk-event! I always agree with your views/talks that you share here on-line. Cultural essence should definitely not be ignore or lost because it’s the important base to the piece’s soul – the connection between the artisan/artist/master/apprentice and the piece itself – thank you for being here on-line sharing 🙏
頑張ってって英語で難しいですね
Keep it up いいですね
Gambatte ne! It’s one of my favorite expressions in Japanese. “Do your best, I’m pulling for you! “
Oh, that looks good! I know people who have had workshops with both of them.
❤️❤️
