“I am the past. You are the future (of Sashiko).” I came up with this phrase last year, and I tell everyone who takes our workshops. Sashiko Artisans cannot exist by themselves. We are a (small) part of (big) sustainability. A person who learns Sashiko mixing with their own speciality & interests will create another future of Sashiko. The past (I) pass down the essence to the future (anyone who wishes to learn).

“Natural Dye” is one of the most challenging parts in the whole picture of sustainability. In the past, without chemicals, Natural Dye was the only way to color the thread. Now, it became a choice – a challenging, but precious one.
☆
Can you guess why Natural Dye is important in Sashiko, especially stitching on Vintage Fabric to make Boro? I will offer my understanding (not an answer) on this question tomorrow.

@sinobu_19671885 is one of the very first participants for Japanese Online Sashiko Class. While she enjoys Sashiko, she found her passion in Natural Dye – and she is doing fantastic work as a rising artisan. She learned Sashiko as the Japanese ordinary, and mixed Sashiko with her own Interest. She is another future of Sashiko I appreciate. (Please be advised that we do not teach Natural Dye / her thread will be available @upcyclestitches in 2021).

Thread is very important to Sashiko, in my opinion. The stitcher has a “conversation” with the thread, fabric and pattern and each must have a voice.
I love your posts almost as much as i love your captions. I really appreciate the thought you put into it. You are doing your culture and the world of craftspeople a service. Thank you 👏

the threads in this picture appear to be woven rather than twisted. is there a name for thread that is weaved instead of twisted? It would seem to be stronger and more durable
