In today’s society with the Internet, anyone can say anything on any topics. We as readers/listeners have to be mindful of what we are reading/listening, and learning. Unlike the past, nothing will validate one’s practice but oneself. I can only hope, but I sincerely hope you are learning Sashiko(and Boro) from someone who respects the Japanese culture, not the one who focuses on something else with using the Japanese words.

In the old-fashioned Japanese mindset, “Teaching” is quite “solemn”. None of the artisans I grew up with would comfortably teach their Sashiko to others no matter how many years of experience they have. I was hesitant to teach in 2016. I still feel I need to learn more to “teach”. Therefore, I cannot just imagine how one can reach the place to teach on the subject with a few years of experience… or a few months, or even a few weeks? (I hope no such thing as “a few days of practice, then jump to teaching”.) Teaching a subject outside of my culture without having the specific teacher who is very educated in the specific subject/culture is also outside of understanding. I just cannot imagine that.
☆
“Teaching” is not all about “teaching the technique” and “how to”. At least, my “teaching” is more than technique (of course, I teach techniques as well). Anyone can learn techniques, but applying the techniques without a mindset may twist the whole practice… and I am sad to see some cases. Please consider learning from us. I won’t disappoint you, if you are serious about learning Sashiko.

It is sometimes said that the best way to learn something thoroughly is to teach it. I like how you said you still feel you need to learn more to teach. I think that makes for a very good teacher. The continuation to strive for a better understanding, and a better way to relay all of your knowledge benefits both the teacher and the student. I like to think that even great masters never stop learning. Thank you for your continued insight and reflection.
福袋楽しみにしています😊
