I often write: Sashiko/Boro is NOT ◯◯. I understand your wonder (or frustration) why I do not offer the correct definition instead of saying “NOT”. Well, as you may guess by now, since Sashiko/Boro existed in the ordinary, there is no “one correct definition”. It differs based on many elements. I would like to respect all of the definitions regardless of how “loud/quiet” the voice is. Therefore I share as many stories as possible, including my own understanding. I want you to find your own definition of Sashiko/Boro if you like it so much to call your stitching Sashiko/Boro.

Boro may be the Art for you. I also think Boro is very beautiful. However, I never wanted to “own” someone’s Boro (I have never purchased a “finished” Boro piece in a flea market). “Good Boro” often carries so many stories that I sometimes freak out. It is my personal impression. I may be too sensitive… but I do not want them in my house. Therefore, all of Boro we have/introduce/sell is “made” by our artisans after 2014. We know who made it (most likely it is either Keiko or me). Of course, we need the old vintage fabrics to make the “To-Be-Boro” pieces which also carry stories. However, I feel easier because we also add our stories there to small fragments. By stitching, it becomes ours and I can keep using it. Then using it makes it more authentic Boro. Even just in this one post, I may be able to share that “Boro is mending technique” is a bit of too simple a summary to describe what the word means to us. I hope it makes sense to you.

Beautiful
Each time you mend something its story grows doesn’t it, no matter fabric or other item. You only mend things that have value in your life, whether the value is necessity or sentimental or something else… Taking on ownership brings responsibility, this is massively overlooked in modern culture. – your posts really make me think all over the place.
Who you are and the way you share your experience and understanding is one of the brightest spots in the wide world I perceive. The firm love you interweave for everything in your sphere, in a manner of wrestling with rather than fighting against. Its wow. Thank you for you.

Beautiful 😊
