Sashiko and Boro. For some reason, many people think that Sashiko and Boro are two separate techniques in Japanese stitching. I have been sharing what these words mean to us on SNS, Youtube, and my website since 2015. You probably know it already, but let me rephrase it again.

☆

Boro is a result of repetitive Sashiko.

☆

Sashiko and Boro are on the same chronological line. The Japanese stitched. Then, after using the fabric, they needed to stitch more. By repeating this, the fabric became Boro. I am trying to reenact this process with sharing Live Streaming. Boro is not a word for technique. Please listen to the silent voice of fabric. By learning more about Sashiko and Boro, the “technique” may sound superficial to describe how the Japanese developed this practice.

Leona’s birthday party on Sunday.

Leona’s birthday party on Sunday. Many friends visited us and it was so much fun time together. I couldn’t take many photos since I kept offering food & cleaning, but one photo with Sashiko dish cloth! Good time here. 日曜日は三歳の娘の誕生日パーティでした。 沢山のお友達&親御さんに来て頂いて娘も大満足。御飯作って片付けてを繰り返して、全然写真が撮れてないのですが、少しだけ刺し子と一緒の写真を。 先日刺した麻の葉は間に合いませんでした。すみません。 2018-03-19 04:07:12 Source

After all, when it comes to “Preserving the Culture”, what matters are “Responsibility (Readiness to take)” and “Seriousness (level of commitment)”. If one is aware of where they stand, then the level of responsibility & seriousness can be balanced. When this balance is disturbed, then Cultural Sustainability also faces the…

I repeatedly mention that it is very important to learn “how to transfer & draw the pattern on the fabric for Sashiko”. However, it is also true that a fabric with pattern pre-printed is useful and easy to enjoy Sashiko. So, here it is. @UpcycleStitches and we start carrying the…

Your posts have made me realize how glad I am that I learned about boro at a textile exhibit at the Portland Japanese Garden some years ago, titled “mottainai.” The boro textiles were clearly the result of long use and repeated repairs over time.

I always thought Boro was the art of the patch repair and sashiko was the stitching. Is there another name for the repeated patch repair process.

    刺し子をしてその延長に襤褸なんですけどね
    枝豆から、大豆、納豆、味噌 同じものですからね。よい例えです

I think Americans in particular like to play with words turning nouns into verbs. Ok I got an example. If I need to spend some time paying bills today I might say I would be adulting today (doing the responsible thing instead of all the fun things).
