There are quite many Japanese words that require a whole essay to explain what it really means. For example, 諸先輩方 (Shosenpaigata) is the word I often use in the Japanese context, but cannot use it in English because the language doesn’t have the exact same meaning. In order to explain the word, it would requires pages of description.

Senpai – is the word for “older”, “senior”, and “superior” when we look up. All of the meaning is correct, but not sufficient. The word “Senpai” is becoming a English word in some cases, but it is more in unique situations (in manga & anime). The closest example would be the usage in Martial Art – Budo (武道） – which is another example of difficult words to appropriately translate. Budo and Martial Art are not equal in my understanding.

This is one of the reasons I do not like offering a simple answer (or definition) about Sashiko/Boro in English. Therefore, I keep sharing as many stories as I can here and there to describe what Sashiko/Boro are for us. So, please read what I have been writing before asking for a quick answer/definition.

日本語と英語の翻訳は、なかなかに骨が折れます。表面的な意思疎通であれば深く悩む必要はないのですが、文化を伝えるとなると、単純な単語の直訳だけでは本質が失われてしまいます。例えば、「先輩」という単語。直訳すると「年上の」という英語が使われるのですが、それだけだと「先輩」が持つ意味合いが少し変わってきます。例えば、「武道」。英語にすると「格闘技」という意味合いが強くなりますが、格闘技と武道は出発地点が違うように思います。

刺し子や襤褸に関わる言葉も一緒です。ただ、これは「受け手（翻訳されたものを読む側）」の問題だと思っています。日本語を知らない人が、如何に訳された表面的な意味だけを信じず、深く学ぼうとするか。逆も然りですが、刺し子に関しては日本語をも勉強するくらいの気持ちでいてくれると嬉しいなと思うのです。特に、文化を語り刺し子を教えるのであれば。

教えてもらう側の心構えというか姿勢って、大切ですよね。それがないといくら師が良くても育たない。その考え自体が日本的なのかもしれないけど日本の文化を知る(語る)ならまずそこからなのかなぁという気もします。
異文化交流に言語は不可欠と言う事はないけど、異文化理解には必要だと思います。言語をある程度マスターしたとしても、深く理解するにはその国を訪ねてそこで暮らす人々と触れ合ってみないと難しいかな。言語と同じぐらい不可欠なのはリスペクトと想像力だと思う。
個人で刺し子や襤褸を楽しむだけなら、そこまでしなくてもいいだろうけど、異文化の物を発信したり教えたりする人には、そうあって欲しいな。
