Underneath of my generosity… there is anger. Many thanked me for sharing my knowledge and stories. It is my pleasure. I am not here, however, to make you happy superficially. Sashiko may be “happy meditative stitching” for you, but it is “life” for me – which often involves anger.

My family (& myself) suffered a lot in the process of protecting the Sashiko we share today. There was a good time – but for us after the Japanese economy crashed in the 90’s, most memories are… almost agony. Is it bad to feel anger at something the others enjoy now? Am I ruining the fun party (trend)? There are many who take advantage of the word “Sashiko” and the fact that most Japanese do not speak English well. If “making money” is my main interest – like others – things get super easy. Instead of writing here on SNS everyday, I just simply become an ass-kisser. However, in order to pass down the “original image” of Sashiko, I do not want to do that. At the same time, for the sake of “Japanese culture”, I do not attack someone specific for accusing the “Cultural Appropriation”.

It is “You” who can change the world. You may think your influence is small… it may be, but you aren’t powerless. I don’t have a big influence, but I don’t give up. I cannot give up. If you think it is important to preserve the culture, please spread what I share. Please choose who you are supporting (shopping from). If one gives you a quick answer – they probably don’t understand the core of Sashiko. Please follow a person who shares “What/who” instead of “only How”. Sharing “how” will only leave the surface of “it”. I feel there are many who “sell” Sashiko – but sadly, there are very few who try to “learn”. I want to change this “superficial/instant gratification”. Finally, I sincerely appreciate who supports what I do – thanks to you, I haven’t given up.

😍😍😍 It’ s beautiful!!!
What you say about being easy if it were just about money making is so very true.
A few years ago a couple of ladies started a business from their hobby of patterns on fabric using resist techniques ‘inspired’ by Japanese techniques. I refuse to use the term because I don’t know enough of the history of these techniques other than they are many, varied and time consuming. I also know that the techniques came from a time where the dyestuffs were also born of time and expertise.
This business took full advantage of the growing trend (as most do, of course) but used chemical processes and even factory printing of items – resulting in their products not even being produced by human hands.
Some may say they have every right to do this, and I guess they do. But my objection is that their business name and website is simply the name of the original technique, yet their processes, in the race to make more product quickly (and therefore more money quickly) are in the main, not even close to using the techniques.
I don’t know if they are still in business but every time I saw their name and product being advertised, I felt very uncomfortable.
Your posts about the life of sashiko and boro help explain why. Thankyou
Hermoso trabajo 👏💙💙♥️💙
Your words are as important as the stitching, thank you for sharing both.
