Okay. I overcame my panic-mode. It is my worst-nightmare to share the incorrect & harmful information due to lack of my caring (mindful learning). I concluded that the advice from the medical professions is based on the misunderstanding of who I am. They may have thought that I would use it as a replacement of N95 to prevent COVID-19. Although I wish they had read my many previous posts, it is my responsibility to state clearly what I mean by sharing the DIY fabric mask. So, please read below.
☆
1. The DIY mask is NOT a medical solution at all. It will NOT replace the N95 mask. (I have written everywhere). 2. Sashiko is unnecessary for a “protective” mask. If your project is for continuous protection, please find better fabric & forget about the design.
3. The DIY mask requires the proper care such as sanitizing & handling carefully. I will share the procedure more later.
4. DIY mask will not give anyone safety. The necessary precaution is still very much required (Stay home, wash hands, keep social distance.) ☆
Above said, I believe that “the DIY mask is better than Nothing” in a situation where I need to protect myself from someone coughing or me spreading the COVID-19 directly via droplet. For very short term usage, with very careful operation, with proper sanitation. Again, not a solution, this is an alternative where we cannot have the N95. The DIY mask is NOT encouraging you to go out & have fun with others. Stay the F__ at home. ☆
Please remember being mindful. It is easy to imagine why I share the DIY mask if you follow this account. I am a Japanese in the US. It explains a lot. I appreciate many comments, buyt please read my previous posts. Please, PLEASE read what I write instead of reading what you want to read. ☆
It is true that we all have to be careful in using “it”. I have a responsibility to explain the risk & benefit of DIY masks. I thought I was doing harmful things to others… but I believe I am not (Thank you!). Regardless, it is your decision. Please take care of yourself. I want to do everything before it comes to the worst. ☆

I often use words like “Japanese” and “Western”. Please understand that these are NOT mutually exclusive – one often has both. So, it is irrelevant to be defensive when I say “Western”. The categorization here is not for a definitive label, more like each expectation to have good communication. ☆…

You may like this project I just started more than our usual Sashiko. Probably surprising to some of you, who recently encountered Sashiko, I wouldn’t consider this Sashiko much. I don’t mind someone calling this type of denim “Sashiko” when they try to acknowledge Stories behind Sashiko… but, I wouldn’t…

In this account, I am sharing the Sashiko & how “different” the understanding can be. Not “Wrong”, just “different” – because of this difference, the understanding of Sashiko in English can be insufficient. After all, “Sashiko” is a Japanese practice rooted into the Japanese culture. The culture is deeply related…

If it blocks 75% of the virus from reaching others if you suddenly sneeze or cough, then it is doing its job. If it blocks 50%, it is doing its job. Its job is to *be better than nothing*, and nothing is what most people have. My guess is those who criticize, are also those who hoard medical grade masks outside of a medical environment.

Thank you for your post. Agree completely with all your sentiments. Whatever else the mask you made is very beautiful. Take care and stay safe. I live in the UK and I am in self- isolation as I live with a vulnerable person and the problem here is getting worse 💙

Thank you for this. It has inspired me to make a couple out of my handwoven fabric (outer) and commercial liner. Every little bit helps- especially when you think of someone you love who would be affected if you didn’t take precautions.

I didn’t want you to feel bad about posting the masks you make, actually that was the last thing on my mind. Stay safe.

I also read a washable cover can extend the life of an N95 mask. People should remember that clirh is what people used in the past, before N95 masks.

Your mask was beautiful! I loved it and plan to pivot my biz to make some too.
While not medical grade, they can be an added cautionary step to someone who has run out of groceries and needs to step out. Sending much love to my fellow creators❤️

You and your writing and account have made me want to learn Japanese. I want to learn Japanese because I want to become more Japanese in my soul. I believe that if you truly want to understand and “breathe” a culture, you have to know the language, and be able to understand it “standing inside it”. I will probably die before I truly achieve this, but I want to at least get closer in this life.

I also think like you. I made the textile masks for me and my family, with a small pocket where to put a piece of non-woven fabric, so that I could change it, and sterilize the mask. I also think it would be better if we all used them. #betterthannothing

I love your sashiko mask- it is lovely! I’m in NYC & I watched a video by an ER doctor here who suggests everyone wear these DIY fabric masks when around others in public. The main reason is to prevent us from the inevitable unconscious face touching since that is the #1 way the virus spreads. They are great for personal use while running necessary errands & I am making some for my family & friends. 💕
