I believe Sashiko has several similarities to Zen philosophy. One of them is Zen’s core principal – 不立文字 (Furyumonji) – the philosophy of “the essence cannot be experienced with words and letters”. In order to understand Sashiko, words are not enough. One needs to stitch – hopefully in the same way as we do so we can share more. On the other hand, in this society, many people prefer “words” because reading is much easier than practicing it. Repainting the culture can be easily done by words – because sometimes the popularity goes over the truth. ☆
I share my Sashiko practice without any edit or modification on Live Streaming. This is as pure as it can get. I hope I am communicating the importance of practice. At the same time, I need to keep writing to prevent the repainting of Sashiko by words – I love words (reading & writing), and therefore I know the power of the words. I hope many people will “try Sashiko with their hands” instead of asking for answers explained by words. ☆

毎日のように刺し子を文章にしていますが、原則、「刺し子はやってみなければわかりません」という気持ちがあります。どれだけ刺し子糸の素晴らしさを紹介しても、どれだけ運針の楽しさを文章にしても、根本的な「なぜ？」という疑問は、実際に刺し子した人にしか伝わりません。懸念しているのは、この実体験を通らずに言葉で刺し子を紹介する人が増えていること。目的が商売なのか、人気を得る為なのかはわかりませんが、甘くて綺麗で安易な言葉は、人を魅了します。自由ですぐ答えを欲しがる社会、「なんでもいいさ」というハードルの低い優しい言葉は、職人気質の厳しい言葉よりも、やっぱり魅力的なんです。

「運針してみて！刺し子してみて！」。昔はそれだけで刺し子が伝われば良いやと思っていたのですが、刺し子の流行が進むにつれ、10分くらい刺し子をして、「刺し子分かった！」という人が出てきているような気がして、ここは少し声をあげないとと思っています。ちなみに、「刺し子には刺し子糸を使って欲しい」という願いですが、刺し子を続けて、刺し子をしたものを実際に使うようになると、刺し子糸以外は使ってられないようになります。すぐ切れるし、布に馴染まない。何十時間もかけて刺し子をするのであれば、最初から良い糸使おう……となります。「刺し子、どんな糸でも良いよ」という人は、僕からみると、「刺し子してるのかなぁ……」という穿った目で見てしまうのです。まぁ一時的なブームから刺し子を見ている人は、作ったもので注目が集めることが目的だから、「刺し子したものを使う」ところまでは気が向かないのかも知れませんが。
