I feel unpleasant to the trend of calling Sashiko with “Wabi-Sabi”. In fact, I want to question how they define “Wabi-Sabi” and relate to Sashiko without understanding the culture of both terms. If one believes that the Sashiko is beauty in “imperfection” then it is somewhat insulting the Sashiko stitchers who practice(d) Sashiko. The stitches are indeed “imperfect” because everything is hand-made. However, they had the pride to be the better artisans – better stitchers. I will not accept an interpretation of the unskilled stitching with easily saying “beauty in imperfection”. Look at this Jacket. Do you call it the beauty in imperfection? It is as perfect as we (humans) can get (but we cannot be perfect because we are human, and therefore it is beautiful). どうも「侘び寂び」と「刺し子」を結びつける流れに違和感があります。苛立ちたくないので、あまり深読みはしないようにしているのですが、（体調も悪いことだし）少し読んでみました。「不完全の中にある美しさとしての侘び寂び」と「手仕事としての刺し子」に共通点を見出して、「完璧じゃなくていいよ〜」という意味合いで、侘び寂びと刺し子を結びつけているのでしょうか……？

もしかして。。。だけど、もしそうだとしたら。それは刺し子を営んできた人々への侮辱とも取れる、思慮が足らない解釈だと思うのです。「知らなかった」という大前提はあるので仕方ない面もあるのですが、こうして表現をしている以上、「知らなかった」とは言わせないようにしたいな……と。

刺し子は決して「不完全の美」ではありません。結果的に、運針（手仕事）で作り出される針目は、機会が作る針目の様な全てが同じ大きさの針目にはなりません。しかしながら、だからといって、刺し子を営んでいた人が、「完璧（より良い針目）を求めなかった」なんて軽く思って欲しくない。そこには刺し子をした人々のプライドがあり、また日本人の持つ完璧主義者としての職人気質があります。できない理由を求めて、言葉に簡単に逃げてほしくない。刺し子を「アート」と呼びたくない理由もそこにあります。刺し子の美を表現できる言葉は、皆様もご存知の「用即美」です。この大原則をやっぱり広めなきゃなんでしょうね。
