A bit of my insight about “imperfection” in Sashiko. It is true that the “perfect” Sashiko stitching does not exist in hand-stitching. Also, probably, the “perfect” Sashiko stitching by a machine will not inspire the others as much as the one with hand-stitching. In short, the Sashiko we enjoy may be admired for its “imperfectionism” there.

However, I want to share that the beauty in imperfection is merely a result. I want to encourage everyone to improve their Sashiko skill, aim for the better, and ultimately trying to be “perfect” in their own definition. I do not want them to use a concept of “imperfection” to give up the possibility and opportunity for improvement. I occasionally see the phrase, “My uneven stitches are beautiful because Sashiko is the beauty from imperfection.” It is the true statement. However, the Japanese artisans would not mention the imperfectionist subjectively. It is our nature to be humble in the technique, and we always try our best to be “perfect (better)”, with knowing we cannot be “perfect” because we are merely a human (not God). ☆
So, the imperfectionism is by the result of us trying to be closer to perfect, not being satisfied with the current skill we have. One of my goals here is to encourage the improvement in Sashiko skill. So, I hope you would continue your learning & practice on top of enjoying the “imperfection”. I don’t want you to use the “imperfectionism” to give up your growth.

Please understand that I am purely talking about the Sashiko and the attitude in stitching. As a human, I embrace the imperfectionism as a human being, who we are as imperfect matter.

Thank you. I perfectly avere!👏
Sorry. Agree!
Yes definitely. Sashiko by hand is such an immersive relaxing pleasure, yes it doesn’t need to be perfect. I despair that some promote doing it by machine! That is not what Sashiko is about, that is the modern worlds obsession with doing things fast! Not to be encouraged
Thank you so much for your insight and thoughtful words on the subject 💙👖
It is so beautiful
Gorgeous 💙💙💙
