[Why it is not okay to call an underwear Kimono ①] – this is Atsushi’s personal insight about the on-going Cultural Appropriation issue with @Kimono ☆
The first & most important concept of C/A with Kimono is that Kimono is more than the Japanese traditional clothing. Yes, Kimono is the traditional clothing, but it is more like a result of the practice. Some of Kimono strongly associated with special events – like festivals, customs (like welcoming ancestors) weddings, and funerals. The Japanese carry memories in Kimono. Each Kimono associated with their own feelings and who they are. We sometimes call Kimono as “晴れ着=Haregi – clothing in extraordinary day”. Clothing was the way to distinguish the day from ordinary days, and Kimono was their special wearing for that purpose. It cannot be the name for the underwear.

Ah. I wish I could just keep writing and talking all day long. It is not about Sashiko, yet Kimono and Sashiko has many similarities (and differences).I have so many stories to share. It will benefit us to understand Sashiko (and Boro) more, so please bear with me. I plan to write an article about it, but it can take forever. Meanwhile, I will share as much as I can tentatively. @kimono deleted the comments about C/A. It is the intentional ignorance. Not cool at all. I try my best to explain what Kimono is. However, please try to research as well. I am not so well-knowledged in Kimono. This requires a good teamwork.

「矯正下着のブランドとしてのKimono」は良くないと昨日の投稿に書いて怒って、同時に、まぁ「文化の盗用（私物化）」のプロセスでは、こういうのも（大変だけれど）通るべきなのかなぁと少しだけ気を抜いたのが馬鹿でした。@Kimono での、「Kimonoと呼ばないで！」というコメント、全て削除されている模様です。これはもっと良くない。着物文化はわかったけど、でも気にしないぜっていうことでしょ？

刺し子と着物は大きく違うものですが、同時に類似点もあったり。着物についての思いを紹介することで、きっと刺し子の説明にもなるとは思うので、引き続き思いを紹介します。

これ、「雑巾 – ZOKIN」って下着のブランド名だったらここまで感情的になってない。「変な外国人がおる（笑）」って笑ってすむのに。着物という、衣文化における「ハレとケ」の晴れ着の部分を私物化しちゃ、そりゃ駄目ですよ。上記、「着物文化はわかったけど変更しない」という意思表示だと思うので、何ができるかわからないけれど、怒っているぞという意識表示はしないとと思うのです。

I think it’s good that you and others put down the feet and educate and inform us about the big issues that arises when a new brand name intentionally (or unintentionally) clearly offend so many people, as in this case of launching Kimohno. When visiting Asakusa I was amazed over how the Kimono made the women (young and old) both look their very best and very dignified and it gave me just a little hint of the value of the traditions of wearing the Kimono.
Thank you for taking kimono and sashiko cultures so seriously and informing us that are not born into these cultures. I humbly support your noble fight against cultural ignorance and disrespect…
