I love Jazz. In my twenties, there was a moment when I start “liking” the Free Jazz – It became an entertainment from a collection of sounds (noise… sorry). As my experience with Jazz, I can see that Sashiko may transform its look for more “free” from “traditional”. I hope, as the most of free Jazz artists are also very good at standard jazz, the Sashiko stitcher would enjoy the standard (traditional) of Sashiko techniques. ☆
Never too late to start learning something new. Sashiko isn’t complicated. Once they learn the posture and some techniques, it is just a matter of practice. When they have enough time to stitch continuously, they will reach to our levels of running stitch after a few years, possibly within a few months. I have many testimonies thanks to all the opportunities of me offering workshops. We have some workshops planned in NYC in 2019. I will send another invitation for the Online Sashiko Class for those who are in the waiting list. I (Atsushi) will keep Sashiko stitching in standard form because I know one of the best “free” Sashiko stitcher – Keiko. Please check the link from the profile to get the information you would like – the workshop in NYC and/or Online Sashiko Class.

I fell head over heals in love with sashiko. I have made Kimono before in my textile studio, using vintage fabrics or old clothes which I took apart. I like to make also patchwork Kimono. I prefer them short, so I can wear them like a tunic or blouse. Right now I am making one of an indigo like fabric, which I have found on the bottom of my huge stash. I am stitching away in sashiko like manner. It is not structured, like real sashiko, but all over the place. I love to get inspired while working on the piece. I am including different stitch lengths and motives in my first work. I really admire though the accuracy of some of the sashiko patterns of Japan. So mathematical and even and comform. It has somehow a comforting effect, a calming effect. I am often getting carried away with my ideas and inspirations, lol. Free spirit is showing up on my designs I guess. lol … greetings from Germany, Christina
