Great photos from a participant (@from6e) of Atsushi’s Sashiko workshop in NYC. She took the workshop about 2 years ago, and here is the stitch comparison in 2017 and 2019. One of the reasons I hesitate to declare “Sashiko as (Fine) Art” is that “everyone can do Sashiko running stitch.” It takes a lot of practice, and a bit of sense, to make a big Sashiko pieces, but it is accumulation of hand-stitching after all. My goal is to provide the information (and full-package of skill) first, then encourage people to continue so they will “feel” that they can do it. Some of my videos or Sashiko jackets may be overwhelming at the first glance, but I promise here that you can do that. Many people comes to me apologizing that they said “they never would be able to do that… lol.” We share Sashiko & we develop the calcuram to teach the Sashiko running stitch more efficiently. We had to learn by just watching it so it took for a long time, but I will try to verbalize everything you need to know first. After that, it is one’s practice to keep enjoying so one day, they will have a “Ah-Ha!” moment.

約2年前にNYCでワークショップを受講頂いた方から、嬉しい写真を頂きました。ワークショップ直後と今の運針比較画像です。細かく、リズムに乗れてる運針が伝わってくるはず。「刺し子は芸術だ」と突き進めない理由の一つに、「刺し子は誰にでもできる」という信念があるからです。もちろん、芸術と称される作品を作れるかどうかは別の話ですが、運針と基本的な伝統柄の刺し子は、必ず誰にでもできると信じています。向き不向き、下手上手はあるにしろ、だって、刺し子そのものは日常だったわけで。頭でわかる先にある、「あ、できた」という感動を多くの方に味わってほしいなぁと。僕ほど、「後から（あれほどできないっていってごめんなさい）って謝罪があるワークショップ講師」も珍しいのではないかと思ったり（笑）
