Patchworking the small pieces of fabric swatches. When we include some of Japanese vintage fabric, it becomes a nice piece of fabric art.

What makes Keiko so special is that she can make a Japcket out of those patchworked fabric naturally. I am not only talking about the tailoring skill. It is her sense (as an artist) to make everything “smooth” by choosing the best fabric, pattern, and Sashiko stitching.

The photo is a “part” of the patchworked Sashiko Jacket Keiko had made in 2018. Again, this is a part of the Jacket which a person would wear. Can you believe that? The more I understand her work, the more I feel I need to communicate to the fabric and thread. Whew. ☆
小さくなってしまった古布のハギレをパッチワークすると、とても素敵な一枚布になります。恵子さんの凄いところは、そのパッチワークを一着のジャケットとして仕立てあげてしまうこと。ここで凄いのは、「仕立ての技術」だけではありません。何が大切かというと、どこに何を配置するとお洒落になるのか、配置するとしたら、どの程度の刺し子に留めるのか。一つ一つの決断に恵子さんのセンスが出てくるのです。「作る前からなんとなくわかる」という恵子さんの言葉が、「仕様書や言語での説明」では図りきれない彼女の設計図があるような気がして、深く知れば知るほど、彼女の才能を確信するようになりました。

写真、古布と刺し子のパッチワークです。これが立体的になり、ジャケットの一部に「違和感なく」収めること。和とすること。ここに辿り着くまでには、僕はまだまだ布と糸と会話ができるようにならなきゃなと思うのです。手前味噌ですが、「刺し子アーティスト」となるのは、彼女だと勝手に思っております。（一応、僕も英語では名乗ってるけどｗ）
