Do you remember Photos of Hitomezashi Sashiko Swatches for Atsushi’s Sashiko Jacket? Keiko completed her project to surprize him with the Jacket.

In addition to the requests I made (which I introduced on 10/28 post), the key point of this Jacket is “re-creatable” because we used “To be Vintage” fabric instead of “already vintage fabric”. We used the fabric from the long established fabric craftsman in Japan, and we tried to take the order for the Jacket. Boro & vintage fabric is beautiful, but the problem is the availability for the request. For this one, with using the fabric made in recent years, we can make the similar Jacket. Well, it may take a long time to do so, though.

10/28にご紹介した一目刺しの布地を覚えていらっしゃいますでしょうか？僕が恵子さんにお願いをしたジャケットなのですが、来年に来年の仕立になるかなぁと予想していたところを、思いっきり無理して今回のアメリカ訪問に間に合わせてくれました。相変わらずのサプライズ好きです。

今回のジャケットも一点ものです。ただ、従来の作品と違うのは、「古布」を使っていないということ。日本の質の良い、また伝統的な手法で作られた布を使いながら、「いつか古布になり、また襤褸になれる」ジャケットを作って貰いました。利点は、「一点物だけれども似たものが作れる」ということです。良い古布が手に入らない現代で、日本の布作りの職人さんの布を購入しつつ、こういうジャケットが作られていくというのは、「伝統を残す」という意味合いでも大切なのかな……と。もちろん時間はかかりますけれども。質の良い布にはばっちり合ってくれる、草木染め糸も素晴らしい逸品です。
