An old photo of Sashiko & Tabi (Japanese socks for outside work purpose…I guess). The creater unknown (yet someone in our previous family business). It isn’t authentic Tabi because we confirm the rubber-sole.

Although it isn’t competely vintage & traditional Tabi, it looks interesting when I see it from the perspective of “How Sashiko transformed over years”. Sashiko used to be more like a way to strengthen the fabric, later on, especially after we can get rubber pretty easily, it shifted the purpose to decoration (yet still thinking of strengthening the fabric). Again, there is no right or wrong. It is just interesting to see the beauty of it, even in a transition.

昔の写真。誰が作った足袋かも定かじゃなくて、でも面白いからご紹介。それこそ、本来の足袋はゴム底なんてなかったので、底にはひたすらびっしり刺し子をして強度と滑り止めを確保して。ゴム底が手に入るようになってからは、底は確保しつつもお洒落とデザイン、加えて強度にも意識を向けて。一瞬ミスマッチかな……と思う刺し子足袋とゴム底の写真なのですが、これが刺し子の歴史の流れを表現しているんじゃないかという違う側面からみると、それなりに楽しめるものでもあるのです。
