One of the most frequent questions is about Japanese Blue = Indigo. Why the tradition of Sashiko is Indigo Blue and white thread. I do not have the solid answer with backup documents, but here is one of the theory.

Indigo was the most reasonable and acceccable dye method they had. It was the easy way to color the fabric with Indigo.

When Japan opened its nation (end of national isolation), the non-Japanese who visited Japan saw many Indigo — the ordinary blue the ordinary people wore. Then, it became the Japan Blue – the nation of Blue. It is merely a guess, though.

ワークショップで聞かれる質問の一つに、「なぜ刺し子の伝統と呼ばれるものは、藍染と白糸なのか？」というものがあります。調べてみた時期もあるのですが、結局文献は見つからず、「藍染め」が一般的で（且つ安価な）染色方法だったから……という結論に辿りついています。時代によっては華やかな色合いの布が、一般庶民の間で禁止されていた時代もあります。刺し子も藍染めも、一般庶民の当たり前の技術だたったのです。

一般庶民の色が藍（青）であれば、開国直後の日本に足を踏み入れた諸外国の皆様は、「おぉ。日本人は青だ」となるのかもしれません。これがジャパンブルーの原点じゃないかなぁと、こちらも推測ですが、思っています。この使うなかで美しくなる藍や刺し子は、やっぱり庶民の美であるが故に、たくましくも繊細なんだろうなぁと。本藍染、大好きなんです（笑）

虫除け、消臭効果もあると言われる藍染、先人の知恵って素晴らしいです。

四国行く前にネットで藍染の歴史を見てからいきました。元々は貴族が絹で着ていて‥とかなかなか面白かったです。防虫効果、消炎効果があり生地が丈夫になるので庶民のものになったんですかね。
